Story

Born in Bordeaux, France

DECEMBER 14, 1949

We are saddened to report the passing of George Remey Wadleigh, who left us on the evening of November 7th, 2022, surrounded by family, at Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, IL.

George was born in 1949 in Bordeaux, France to George Remey Wadleigh and Joy Wadleigh Shane.  He will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Bonniesue, three children, Rob, Allison (Carolyn), Sarah, beloved granddaughter Isabelle, and brother, Dave (Sue), as well as numerous other family members and friends. He was well known for his dedication to  his family and friends, his dry wit, gentle unconditional love, and activism for betterment of the world.

George spent his childhood in Concord, Massachusetts with his three siblings Mary, Dave, and Julie.  He graduated from Stanford University in 1974 with a degree in journalism, and a minor in religious studies. After college he served as a VISTA volunteer running a youth center in southern Illinois, coached countless youth soccer teams, and taught middle school in Alton.  Later, he helped to start up Habitat for Humanity in Alton. He served for over fifteen years as a volunteer chaplain in mental health centers in Alton and Chicago –where he was well-loved by those he served– and was active in the ministerial alliances since 1980. George devotedly worked as a Christian Science practitioner for over forty years. He spent 25 years researching and writing a book entitled The Ram in a Thicket, Rebirth and Reform in the Practice of Christian Science, out of the deep love he had for his church. It was published in August 2021.

His immense love for his family, church, and community had an immeasurable impact and will continue to be felt by those who knew him.
